Within the Walls

Written by Mont Ambassador Geoff Murray

Last week I walked into Tasmania’s Walls of Jerusalem. This is a fascinating area in the Central Tasmania highlands with a superb amphitheatre of mountains surrounding a collection of alpine tarns, grasslands and forests.

This magical landscape, that I have experienced in all 4 seasons, has accepted my presence 26 times now. Despite seeing much heavier use than when I first discovered it in 1989, it is still a wonderful place to visit. Fortunately there is now a system to manage numbers to a sensible level within the park and this helps maintain its value to all that visit it.

It is the coldest place I have slept in in Tasmania at -14°C. It is also notable in the summer months as being a great place to observe Tassie’s beautiful Tiger snake, usually several times on each trip.

I used Mont’s brilliant 4 season alpine integral pitch tent, the Supercell along with my luxurious 680 Helium sleeping bag last week. Over the years I have slept in the Moondance 1 FN, Moondance 2, Epoch, Dragonfly, Krypton and now the Supercelland all of these tents have provided safe and secure shelter.

I thought it might be worthwhile putting a few images together that I have captured over the years.

An amazing place! Winter in there looks magical, wish I was confident to camp/walk in such weather. Great shots!!

For a long time I have hoped I would one day (night) be able to catch a good display of the southern lights, the aurora australis, with one of Mont’s superb wilderness tents included in the view.

On my recent trip to Mongolia, I expected some pretty low temperatures, temperatures that I had not experienced before so I took a range of clothing and gear with me to protect me from the elements.

The sunrises, campfire stories, wondering if you are on route, and memories made with friends is what it is about. The Warrumbungles is certainly a special place to experience these things.
