For backcountry fun and adventure, look no further than the Alpina Discovery 80. These backcountry skis are perfect for skiers looking to push their boundaries, both literally and figuratively. There’s just so much you can do on these skis, it’s kind of ridiculous. While they’re just on the wide side to handle in-track classic skiing, that’s really their only limitation. Backcountry skiing and touring have really blossomed over the past few years, and skis like this are a big part of the reason why. We pair them with an NNN BC binding that’s compatible with BC boots, and this gives you the best of all worlds when it comes to light weight performance and access to some of the funnest and rowdiest terrain that you’d care to freeski in. While not a downhill ski by any stretch, they are creeping in to that region, allowing adventure seekers to gain the best possible control while keeping things light and fun along the way.
Built with an ultra-light wood core with cap construction, these skis are perfect for any adventure you can find. With a lower camber profile versus mor specific in-track and classic skis, the Discovery 80 has better climbing ability because you’re not fighting against that camber to get energy in the kick and glide phase of the stride. The sidecut is a bit exaggerated in these skis, however, making it easier and more pleasant to make a turn, whether you want to or have to, it’s a lot easier and more confidence-inspiring in skis like these versus higher-cambered classic-oriented skis. For skiers looking to push the boundaries, that’s a good thing to be sure.
