Rainwear FAQ's

Why choose a 3/4 length rain jacket?

Mont is one of few outdoor clothing companies designing and producing traditional longer length rain jackets for bushwalking/hiking/skiing in wet and/or windy conditions. In comparison to hip-length jackets these mid-thigh jackets provide significantly greater protection in all conditions.

What are the differences between the Odyssey, tempest & austral/siena jackets?

- The Odyssey and Tempest jackets are made from Hydronaute PRO fabric and the Austral/Siena Jackets are made from Hydronaute fabric. In short, you will stay dryer from perspiration in the Odyssey and Tempest Jackets than you will in an Austral or Siena jacket.

Which jacket is great for veNtilation?

Of the three jackets the Odyssey and Supersonic Jacket are the only ones with pit-zip ventilation. Great for activities that increase your body heat like backcountry skiing, ice climbing and hiking up steep mountains.

Which jacket is the easiest zip to do up in gloves?

In short, the Odyssey, Supersonic and High-plains has the simplest front zip with the least bulk because it has no need for storm flaps over the top of the zip.

I am looking for a travel / EVERYDAY jacket?

The Highplains is a travel jacket, it rolls into its own hood and stores into your bag in for when you get caught in the storm.

WHY AM I STILL WET, WHY IS MY JACKET NOT WATERPROOF?

While we stand by our waterproof ratings in our jackets there is a possibility you are still getting wet from the condensation and sweat inside your jacket. If you find yourself in this situation we recommend wearing a synthetic base layer as it will only hold 1-3% of its weight in moisture compared to merino which holds 30%. This allows the water droplets to escape through the breathable jacket membrane and not get trapped within the base layer and jacket.

We suggest when you are wearing the jacket in an active situation where you are increasing your heat rate up and breaking a sweat to wear synthetic layers to keep you warm/cool and dry.

DO I NEED TO WASH MY rain JACKET?

To maintain best performance and longest lifespan of your Mont Hydronaute Shellwear it is important to keep it relatively clean. While shellwear does not require washing as frequently as general clothing, it is still important to ensure that sweat and body oils and other contaminants do not build up on the fabric. These contaminants, if left on the fabric, may cause bacteria to grow which can eat away at the bonding between waterproof membrane and seam sealing tape, causing de-lamination and a leaking garment.

When it is due for a clean, follow these simple steps to maximise the life and performance of your shellwear.
