Mont Adventure Equipment company questions

Mont is an Australian company and was founded by Andrew Montgomery in Canberra, Australia in 1981. Mont has been designing and developing high quality outdoor equipment and clothing for over 35 years with our corporate headquarters, warehouse, design office and Flagship store all in the one location in Fyshwick, ACT.

Andrew remains the CEO and has a highly involved role in all design and production processes. All Mont products are designed at our Canberra location and tested here in Australia and around the world by our dedicated team of employees and Ambassadors.

The majority of Mont products are manufactured in specialist gear factories in China and Vietnam. The factories we work with are chosen because they are the best at what they do; our sleeping bags are made at a factory chosen because they specialise in down sleeping bag manufacturing, our shellwear are made by a specialist rainwear factory.

Mont Adventure Equipment embraces ethical manufacturing and wherever possible we will use WRAP Certified factories. WRAP certification ensures factories follow strict guidelines to prevent abuse, forced labour, child labour, unlawful workplace conditions or practices, unsafe or unhealthy workplaces and discrimination, to ensure staff get fair and lawful working hours, compensation and benefits, and that factories meet suitable security standards, environmental standards and applicable government and customs regulation.

Further to this, Mont will only use a factory once our own production team has completed an inspection and the factory has passed our quality and safety audits. Many of the factories we use also have ISO quality accreditation which is a globally recognised endorsement of quality manufacturing and business practices.

The materials and manufacturing techniques used nowadays in almost all outdoor goods require specialist factories. Rather than a 'Mont' factory that makes everything, we enlist the best sleeping bag factory to make our sleeping bags, the best tent factory to make our tents, the best backpack factory to make our backpacks, and the best canvas factory to make our backpack canvas which happens to be in Australia.

Senior Mont staff visit factories on a regular basis.

Lots of companies do not visit factories and source product at arm’s length from international suppliers, Mont is different. We have a long history of manufacturing and it is this expertise that we use to ensure that our products are manufactured to the highest possible quality standards. Senior staff regularly visit factories during production, taking a hands on approach to quality control on the factory floor and ensuring that all Mont products are manufactured to our specifications and high quality standards.

The Mont Adventure Equipment product warranty covers against faulty materials and workmanship for a period of 5 years, commencing from the date of purchase.

Should a problem arise during normal use, we will repair or replace the product at our discretion. Failure of products due to improper care, abrasive wear, damage caused by accidents, misuse or the breakdown of materials and components through reasonable wear and tear will not be covered by the Mont product warranty. Unauthorized repairs or product modifications may void the warranty.

Our goods come with guarantees that cannot be excluded under the Australian Consumer Law.

You are entitled to a replacement or refund for a major failure and for any compensation for any other reasonably foreseeable loss or damage. You are also entitled to have the goods repaired or replaced if the goods fail to be of acceptable quality and failure does not amount to a major failure.

For a warranty claim to be evaluated the product must be returned to Mont Adventure Equipment for assessment at the address stated below. A copy of the original purchase receipt or other proof of purchase is also required.

The cost of returning a product for warranty evaluation will be the responsibility of the purchaser unless otherwise authorized for return by Mont.

Items returned to Mont for warranty evaluation must be in a clean condition and free of any contaminants, as this is a requirement of Occupational Health and Safety laws.

The tag attached to some Mont products specifies that you need to register your product for warranty. These tags are no longer current, although some have been supplied recently with current product in error. There is no need to register, your new Mont product is automatically covered by the Mont Product Warranty.

The Mont Adventure Equipment product warranty covers against faulty materials and workmanship for a period of 5 years, commencing from the date of purchase.

We are phasing out the tags that state you need to register your warranty. Please rest assured that no action is required, and your product is automatically covered.

Many brands offer a 'lifetime' warranty but very, very, very few of these 'lifetime' warranties are in reference to the owners lifetime. Rather it is in reference to the functional lifespan of the product, which is largely arbitrary and rests solely in the hands of the manufacturer; a manufacturer might deem a products functional lifespan to be no more than 1 year!

Mont believes it is far more honest, fair and beneficial to our customers, to provide a comprehensive warranty against faulty materials and workmanship for a period of 5 years. Read the complete Mont Warranty for more information.

For several years Mont has manufactured exclusively using duck down as opposed to goose down, for several reasons. First and foremost, Mont duck down is a by-product of the food industry and is not live plucked. Secondly, duck down offers the same performance as a goose down of similar fill power. For example, an 800 loft duck down has the identical weight and warmth as an 800 loft goose down. Thirdly, it is more affordable with no loss in performance allowing us to keep our prices competitive.

As of 2019, Mont Adventure Equipment is certified by the Responsible Down Standard (RDS). RDS certification ensures that the down in RDS labeled products is guaranteed to have been sourced in accordance with the Responsible Down Standard.

Cleaning Gear

For detailed Sleeping Bag Care Guide see here.

If you choose to have your down jacket or sleeping bag professionally washed, ensure the company specialises in cleaning down sleeping bags/down jackets and that they DO NOT DRY CLEAN your product. Dry cleaning a down jacket or sleeping bag will ruin it. Damage caused by improper care is not covered by warranty.

If washing the product yourself:

Give the inside hood or other soiled areas a gentle hand wash before you wash the entire bag/jacket.

Turn the bag/jacket inside out and close all the zippers.

Hand wash, or select a gentle cycle on a FRONT LOADING washing machine with a down specific soap, available from good camping stores.

Use lukewarm water.

Ensure the bag/jacket is rinsed very well and totally free of soaps.

Gently roll up the bag and carefully carry to a dryer with two hands.

Do not use your home dryer.

Tumble dry in a large commercial dryer on low heat. This may take several hours and the bag/jacket should be checked often to make sure it is not overheating.

A few clean tennis balls in the dryer will help prevent the down clumping during drying.

Intermittently massage the bag/jacket to break up any down bunches.Carefully feel the down insulation to ensure it is completely dry.

DO NOT dry-clean. The dry-cleaning process will ruin both the down and the fabric.

DO NOT use a top-loading washing machine as the sleeping bag or down jacket will become entwined around the central spindle and tear open.

Use a shell wear specific wash, available from any good outdoor store. Grangers & Storm make appropriate products. DO NOT use an in-wash waterproofer.

Hand wash with lukewarm water or select a gentle cycle with lukewarm water.

Rinse well after washing.

Hang dry in the shade.

Optional: Once dry, spray the outside of the jacket with a Durable Water Repellent (DWR) Spray as per the instructions on the bottle.

Give the outside of the jacket a low heat iron through a pillow case or similar. Be very careful that the iron is not too hot.

Tents

Never store your tent damp or dirty as mould may develop. Damage may also result from contact with sunscreen, fuel, oil, insect repellent etc.

Never machine wash or tumble dry your tent.

Use warm water & a sponge to clean dirty areas.

Mild detergent may be used if necessary.

Rinse well.

Do not iron.

Do not wring.

Pitch the tent in the shade or line dry only.

Store your clean, dry tent loose in a breathable sack in a cool, dry place.

We hope you get your new Mont Backpack really dirty because we made it to have a lot of fun in some pretty wild and not necessarily clean places. When you do bring it home filthy and wet, here are a few pointers to help you get the most out of your pack for
years to come:

Use a soft, fine bristled brush and lukewarm water to clean off as much dirt as possible.

Rinse well, a hose on the lawn does the trick.

Be careful not to use strong cleaning agents or detergents as these may damage the waterproof properties of the waxed canvas.

Drip dry in the shade It’s important to store your pack dry as damp canvas may become mouldy If it does get mouldy, use a mould removal product available from any good outdoor shop.

Do not use strong cleaning agents.

Do not dry your pack in front of a heater.

Yes. You should wash your Hydronaute shellwear periodically with frequency dependent on how often it is used. Not washing your Hydronaute shellwear will cause more damage; grime on the exterior will inhibit breathability and water shedding, and grime on the inside will allow bacteria growth which can destroy the bonds between seam tape and waterproof membrane causing the garment to leak. See the Shellwear Care Guide washing instructions.

TENT QUESTIONS

The Moondance 2 Tent has a Mesh interior and is ideal for general conditions.

The Moondance 2 FN Tent has a Full Nylon interior and is more suited to winter conditions.

So which should I get?

If you live in a warm climate and most of your camping will be in Summer, Autumn and Spring then the Mesh version will be best.

If you're planning on using your tent in winter or in mountain conditions the Full Nylon may be a better choice. The Full Nylon interior will offer better protection from wind blown rain, sleet or snow, and it will provide a little better insulation, though your most important insulator will be your sleeping bag and sleeping mat. The Full Nylon Moondance tents are far more prone to condensation and as such are better suited to cold climates.

This is also applicable to Moondance EX and EXFN Tents.

See the Moondance Tent Pitching Instructions

No. All Mont tents are sold fully seam sealed, waterproof and ready for rain.

Many other tent manufacturers do not, or have stopped in recent years, seam sealing their tents. Seam sealing on a tent is essential and a tent without seam sealing will leak in rain, or even a morning heavy with dew.

While a footprint for your tent is not essential, it is highly recommended. Often the first part of a tent to wear out is the floor, largely due to abrasion. The cheapest and easiest way to protect the floor of your tent from abrasion is with a lightweight footprint.

Nylon fabrics absorb a small amount of water when they get wet, this causes the fabric to swell and stretch slightly. The fabric is still waterproof. To offset this stretch, simply tension the corners and peg points accordingly.

Sleeping bag questions

On Mont sleeping bags two temperature ratings are given; Women's and Men's.

Generally, but not as a rule, women sleeping 4 to 5ºC colder than men. But, if you are a woman who sleeps very warm then you can certainly take reference from men's temperature rating on Mont Sleeping Bags.

Generally, left handed users are more comfortable with a Right Zip sleeping bag, and right hand users with a Left Zip sleeping bag. Offering both left and right hand zip sleeping bags also allows two sleeping bags to be joined to make a double sleeping bag.

The Zip Side is the side the zip is on when you’re lying on your back in the sleeping bag. A Left Zip will be on your left side, a Right Zip will be on your right side.

If you feel that your Mont sleeping bag is not warm enough, please get in touch with customerservice@mont.com.au to learn about our down up-filling service.
The stated temperature range is an indication of the potential comfort range and minimum temperature that may be possible. This should be used only as a guide. Ratings can vary dramatically depending on whether you are a warm or cold sleeper.

Other factors that will determine your comfort in a sleeping bag are the type of sleeping mat used, whether you're wearing thermals, socks or headwear, your health, metabolism, age and fatigue, hydration levels and what you've eaten. Hydronaute XT shell will increase the warmth of a sleeping bag.
For more information on keeping warm in your sleeping bag, see Six Steps to Staying Warm in Your Sleeping Bag

Double zip sliders are useful on sleeping bags for ventilating.

Double zips can be tricky to use and sometimes it is thought that the zip is faulty. Rather than a faulty zip, often the issue is incorrect use. Follow these instructions to properly use a double zip on your jacket.

• Start by seating the two zip sliders together and at the bottom of the zip.

• Hold the base of the zip beside the zip sliders with one hand between thumb and forefinger. Do not put a finger underneath the zip sliders as this can cause the zip sliders to move up the zip prematurely.

• Hold the base of the zip on the non-slider side with your other hand between thumb and forefinger.

• Push this non-slider side down and through both zip sliders.

• Once the zip is seated in both zip sliders and the bottom of both zip sides is level, you should be able to move the top zip slider up the zip easily.

If the slider does not move easily, the zip is not through the sliders far enough, or the sliders are not seated together correctly, or the sliders are not at the base of the zip. Give the top zip slider a jiggle with downward pressure and try again.

Clothing Questions

With the explosion of merino being used as a base layer for adventure activities, we have seen a parallel explosion of complaints about leaking or non-breathable rainwear. Rather than the rainwear not keeping out and removing moisture like it should, users discomfort has been found to be, almost uniformly, caused by slow drying merino fabric sitting next to skin.

Merino absorbs up to 30% of its weight in water, compared to a technical synthetic fabric like Polartec Power Dry that absorbs only 1% of its weight in water.

Merino is often touted as being warm when wet, even if this is true, you are guaranteed to be warmer if your next to skin fabric is not wet in the first place.

In almost all situations, allegedly leaking or non-breathable rainwear has tested as 100% waterproof and customers problems have been solved and comfort improved by changing their clothing system to fast-drying technical synthetic fabrics. Technical synthetic fabric quickly removes moisture from the skin surface allowing the breathable Hydronaute shellwear layer to expel it, keeping you dryer, warmer and more comfortable.

If you would like more information or assistance about the best clothing systems for adventure please get in touch with Mont Customer Service.

Mont clothing is designed to work together in a layered system. If you take a Medium shirt, then it is highly likely that you would also fit a Medium base layer, Medium Fleece and Medium Shellwear and so on.

Different clothing layers in the Mont range each have their own type of fit; base layers are fitted and designed to sit close to the body, fleece jumpers and jackets are designed to fit comfortably over baselayers, and shellwear is designed with enough ease to fit appropriate insulation layers underneath.

Double zip sliders are useful on jackets for a number of reasons; they allow you to ventilate, to open up the base of the jacket to get overpants on and off easily, to open up the base of longer jackets to sit down easily, and to open the base of the jacket over a climbing harness while belaying, among others.

Double zips can be tricky to use and sometimes it is thought that the zip is faulty. Rather than a faulty zip, often the issue is incorrect use. Follow these instructions to properly use a double zip on your jacket.

• Start by seating the two zip sliders together and at the lowest point on the zip.

• Hold the base of the jacket beside the zip sliders with one hand between thumb and forefinger. Do not put a finger underneath the zip sliders as this can cause the zip sliders to move up the zip prematurely.

• Hold the base of the jacket on the non-slider side with your other hand between thumb and forefinger.

Down Insulation Questions

The quality of down fill and its performance doesn’t necessarily relate to the species it is sourced from. It is true that in the case of extremely high lofting down, loft ratings of 900 and higher, the down is sourced from Geese. But regardless of this fact, an 850 loft Duck Down will be just as warm and have the same weight as an 850 loft Goose Down.

When it comes to bang for your buck, duck down is more affordable than goose down. A sleeping bag with 850 loft duck down will be significantly cheaper and have the same performance as the same sleeping bag with 850 loft goose down inside.

As for differences between grey and white down, those differences are purely cosmetic

For several years Mont has manufactured exclusively using duck down as opposed to goose down, for several reasons. First and foremost, Mont duck down is a by-product of the food industry and is not live plucked. Secondly, duck down offers the same performance as a goose down of similar fill power. Loft is a rating given to down to grade its quality, such as 650 loft down, 785+ loft down, 850 loft down and so on. Loft is a measurement of how many cubic inches one ounce (28.35g) of down consumes. The higher the number, the greater the volume per ounce and the warmer the down will be. 100g of 850 loft consumes 850 cubic inches and has the ability to trap more air, and more warmth, than 100g of lower loft down. Higher loft down is also able to spring back to its full size many more times after compression than a lower loft down.

When comparing down products between different manufacturers it is important to understand that there are multiple different tests used to grade down. Each of these tests have different procedures and will produce varying results. Mont down is tested using only the IDFB USA Test Method.

It is the same as 'loft'. See the question/answer above.
